Brutal Deluxe prepare for tonights much anticipated gig in the comfort of the bar at Mcdermots. Speaking about the title of the new album "Mistah Kurtz....He dead", frontman Chris expalins, "we were looking for a name for the album very early on. Myself and (drummer) John were sifting through quotes from books and films. nothing was sounding quite correct until John quoted a line from "Heart of Darkness", "...and said in a tone of scathing contempt-"Mistah Kurtz..He dead". "The management didnt get it so we knew it was great instantly", enthuses john. Marcus, the bass player and replacement for former band member Toad, sits joking with anyone he meets in the pub. This is the kind of band Brutal Deluxe are, a down to earth, caring band who give as much to the fans as they give to them. "This song fucking rocks in this kind of atmosphere!" john announces, hearing thier own track Crime and Punishment being played through the pubs jukebox. A statement that pales in comparison to one new fan who beams after the live show, " ive been to loads of fucking gigs, but never have i seen a band with so much energy, these guys ROCK".
Which leads to the gig itself. After an overall decent performance by local band RF, the crowd waits, every drummer in the room in awe at the bands drum kit. Three leather clad, dreadlocked super stars take to the stage. First impressions are vital for Brutal to kick start new fans. They dont dissapoint. Crime and Punishment, the albums first track comes screaming down the walls consuming everyone with metal madness. By now, they need not prove themselves any longer.
Brutal Deluxe's sound is that of their own. Its new, its experimental and it really does kick some ass. Every track is honed to perfection, a sign that these guys have been at it none stop since recording the album. Experience has made them finer musicians, evident with live performances of early material from the first album "Divine Head". Everything you know about this band is wrong. You really have to experience them and thier music first hand. Overall this band rock and i hope the next album is just as FUCKED UP as the last one.
