BRUTAL DELUXE came to be circa 1997,driven by the determination and fashioned
from the minds of Christian Nunnikhoven and Jon Clayton. Not for them the
plagiaristic approach of a lot of contemporaries. They both wanted a certain
sound and look that would set them apart from other bands…. they wanted to
be different. Early demos showed promise but the approach was a bit too
different!
The band finally found its feet with the next recording. The Brutal Deluxe sound had started developing…. stripped down music and tribalistic drums blended with distinctive melodies, all packaged in a bombastic live performance that very quickly started drawing attention. It was then, while in Spain, that they heeded the advice of a witch, who instructed them to play without footwear and use tribalistic markings on their faces and bodies. Why did they listen to her? Probably a mixture of Spanish beer and lust (she was very attractive).
With this cohesive image approach and a gut-wrenching demo tucked into their
belt, the band started getting some serious attention from press and record
companies alike. After a particularly storming live performance at the Camden
Underworld at the tail end of 1999, the band signed to new label Dream Catcher
and very quickly entered the studio. On release of the album "Divine
Head" in May 2000 (reviews) the brutal
ones immediately hit the road with fast rising noise crew, Raging Speedhorn
and then later Kill II This and the Lost Prophets.
The band finished the year with a European tour with Napalm Death
and Swedish grindcore merchants, Nasum.
In between tours they recorded a 3 track single "Westworld"
and shot a video with Kerrang's Paul Harries.
2001 saw the band embarking on a 34-date headlining tour of the U.K. culminating
in a showcase for MTV2 at the Borderline. Unfortunately disaster struck
the band when they had all their equipment stolen before the show, putting
the night in jeopardy. However, they soldiered on with hired equipment, putting
on a very successful show. The equipment remains uncovered to this day.
It was at this stage that BRUTAL DELUXE was joined by bass player,
Maxximus and after only one rehearsal the band headed off again on a short
tour taking in a few festivals, amongst them the Bulldog Bash with
Feeder and The Wildhearts.
2001 came to a close with a new life in the band and nearly two album's worth of new material demoed for the second album.
2002 has seen the band in extensive preproduction for the upcoming album
"Mistah Kurtz…he dead" an album that sees the band sound growing
further, capitalising on the words BRUTAL and DELUXE. More brutality and melody
for yer money!
